We live in an area of great natural beauty so of course we want our homes to take advantage of these scenic views. Large windows and multiple windows bring the outdoors in but will your home remain cool in summer and warm in winter? With today’s energy-efficient windows, the answer is “yes.”
Most energy-efficient windows are double- or triple glazed. Double-glazing means the windows are created with two layers of high-tech glass with a small air gap in between. The air gap works as an insulator in the same way that your home’s walls are constructed. Most homes have what are called “cavity walls” meaning the walls have spaces to be filled with insulation. This insulation reduces the air’s ability to move around. In winter, the insulation keeps the home’s warm air from leaking out, and prevents cold air from coming in. In summer, it does the reverse.
With a double-glazed window, the air between the panes of glass functions in the same way. The air gap between the two panes is too small to allow air to circulate so heat is trapped. The trapped air is a poor conductor so there is little heat loss through the window. As a result, rooms within the home stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Many double-glazed windows also contain a locked-in layer of Argon gas. Argon gas reduces the heat transfer through the window glass even more.
Another benefit of double-glazed windows is that they provide an excellent sound barrier, reducing unwanted noise from outside by a significant degree.
To see how well double-glazed windows work, try this simple experiment. Place your hand on the back of a regular window pane and you will feel the cold from outside. Place your hand on the back of the inside pane of a double-glazed window and you may feel cool air but not cold.
